When I rebuilt mine I used automotive filter foam.
Grey stuff, fairly soft.Second time around I added
some "air conditioner " filter foam,fairly tough and
wiry compared to the other stuff - both oiled and
squeezed dry. Check the auto foam fairly regularly.
It breaks down after a while.
I didn't.It broke down to oily particles, which
were ingested by the carb.Much missing and backfiring
until I cleaned it up. The Savage still got me home,
anyway.
